Thank you to the group of 100 Year 7’s and their staff who made me very welcome in their library! I had a brilliant morning. We talked about how to plan a story and we wrote some killer opening lines - some of which are below:-
"I hate you!" my Mother shouted, "I hate you too and that stranger in this house. Ever since we adopted that creature it’s been nothing but trouble!" I covered my mouth to hold my cries….
The day her leg broke was the day her dreams faded and her heart was about to pop. It all happened that day - the day she died….
She sat there in a white deathly silence just thinking about how her life had become a miserable mess and where it all started….
A long, long, long, long, long time ago, cavemen ruled the land. But that was WAY before me - so you probably won’t have to hear about that in this story….
My life was an absolute mess: first, I lose my boyfriend who I’m hopelessly in love with - then I’m kicked out of the building. I call home and then I end up in a disastrous car crash….
It’s all because my Mum didn’t lock the door that my dreams got gassed….
I will not let my best friend steal my goal from me….
The last thing I remembered was how we lost EVERYTHING….
If you really want to know, you’ll probably want to know about me first, then my life….
One mild, summer’s day, my friend, Kate and I were listening to a song by Pink. Suddenly, a tall dark boy stood in front of us - a solitary figure. ”Do you want to play football?” he asked. It all went silent. I couldn’t resist the temptation of saying ‘yes’…..
That night I saw him and that’s when it all started…..
This night the blue skies sing - and make me finally go to bed…forever…..
I woke up to the sound of my parents screaming….
I was awoken by my two gay dads screaming - yes, that’s right my ‘gay dads’!
The lights are flashing, the crowd is screaming and the band is playing - and I’m in the spotlight. Oh wait, that’s only in my dreams…..
It was a month since the aeroplane crashed and I was in the hospital bed. It was a month since I lost my legs.
Even though I can’t see them I feel their eyes staring as I walk, feeling sorry for me….
The moon was full and the night was peaceful until…..”Gold!” (by the way that’s me singing and sorry for the cats in the background - they always start shrieking when I sing). Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I’m Sapphire. Wait, you asked for my life story. OK let’s start from my birth….
Sarah has written in to say; “I’m reading looking for jj and I think it’s really good and I can’t wait to read on it’s already making me excited!”
Totally agree, Sarah, it’s a brilliant book (Anne Cassidy if you don’t know it), completely gripping and moving.
Read on! And send your recommended reads to me so I can post them!

Nuru Kane in Sheffield last night. We sang. We danced. Great night.
and I love this too!
I love this…
My heroine, Sadie Nathanson, is all about the hair. She loves trying out new styles and colours. This is ironic really as I have had approximately the same hairstyle since about 1987 and I cut my hair myself and am absolutely terrified of visiting the hairdresser. I can trace this back to the trauma of having my haircut against my will when I started at a new school. I had longish curly hair and Mum told the hairdresser to crop it short. When I look at the photos now I can see it was a cute pixie cut but at the time I hated it. I just came across this in Glamour Magazine;
and it totally reminded me how great short hair can be.
I just wish I was braver!
Very excited to see my two book covers side by side - can’t wait to share the new Sadie book - 1st July!
The follow-up to Dads, Geeks and Blue-haired Freaks is searchable on Amazon already. Only 4 months to go……
